What We Mean by Restoration
Restoration is not renovation. Renovation replaces what's there with something new. Restoration repairs, replicates, and revives — working to preserve original fabric wherever possible and match it exactly where replacement is unavoidable. Every decision is made with the building's original character as the reference point.
Millwork & Trim
Victorian, Colonial, Craftsman, and Tudor homes all have distinctive millwork profiles — crown moldings, built-up cornices, window casings, wainscoting, and door surrounds — that define their character. We repair damaged sections and replicate missing or deteriorated profiles in wood to match the originals.
Masonry Repointing
Deteriorated mortar joints in brick, stone, and concrete block allow water infiltration that can cause serious structural damage over time. We rake and repoint using mortar matched to the original in color, texture, and hardness — critical on historic masonry where modern Portland cement mortars can cause spalling.
Porch & Veranda Restoration
Original porches are often among the most character-defining elements of an older home — and among the most neglected. We restore porch framing, replace deteriorated decking with period-appropriate materials, repair or replicate turned balusters and columns, and rebuild decorative brackets and fascia.
Window Restoration
Original wood windows in historic homes are often worth restoring rather than replacing — they're built from old-growth wood that's more durable than modern equivalents, and their proportions and profiles are integral to the home's character. We restore sashes, re-glaze glass, repair or replace hardware, and weatherstrip for modern performance.
Working on Pre-1978 Homes
Most historic homes in Westchester were built before 1978 and contain lead-based paint. Federal law requires contractors performing renovation work in these homes to be EPA RRP Certified and follow strict lead-safe work practices. Sunrise Carpentry is fully certified — protecting your family and our crew on every project.
- EPA RRP Certified firm — required for all pre-1978 renovation work
- Certified Renovator present on every applicable job site
- Full lead-safe containment and HEPA vacuum cleanup
- Pre-renovation disclosure documentation provided
- Post-renovation cleaning verification before containment removed
- All required records retained and provided to homeowner
Period-Accurate Materials & Techniques
The quality of a restoration depends on the quality of the decisions made about materials and methods. We work with suppliers who carry period-appropriate lumber profiles, architectural millwork, traditional masonry mortars, and heritage paint systems — because matching the original requires more than good carpentry.
- Old-growth Douglas fir and white oak for structural and finish carpentry
- Custom-milled millwork profiles matched to originals
- Lime-based mortars for pre-1920 masonry repointing
- Traditional oil and alkyd paint systems on exterior woodwork
- Heritage hardwood flooring — quarter-sawn oak, heart pine, chestnut
- Hand-applied plaster repair matched to existing texture and finish

EPA Lead-Safe Certified
Sunrise Carpentry is an EPA RRP (Renovation, Repair and Painting) Certified Firm — required by federal law for any work disturbing lead-based paint in homes built before 1978. Our crew is trained and certified in lead-safe work practices, containment, and post-work cleaning verification. We document all practices and provide records to homeowners.

Our crew uses proper containment, HEPA vacuuming, and wet methods to prevent lead dust from spreading through your home.

Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you match historic millwork that's no longer manufactured?
We use profile gauges and samples to document the exact profile of existing millwork, then work with specialty millwork manufacturers to replicate it in matching wood species. In some cases, we hand-produce complex profiles in our shop. Samples are always approved before we proceed.
Do you work on homes listed on the historic register?
Yes — we're familiar with the requirements for properties on the State and National Historic Registers, including documentation, material standards, and approval processes. We recommend engaging your SHPO (State Historic Preservation Office) early in the process.
Is lead paint a concern in historic homes?
Yes — virtually all pre-1978 homes contain lead-based paint, and most historic homes are significantly older. Sunrise Carpentry is an EPA RRP Certified Firm, meaning we're trained and authorized to perform renovation work safely in the presence of lead. We document all lead-safe practices for your records.
Do you restore masonry as well as wood?
Yes — historic masonry restoration is part of our scope. We repoint mortar using historically appropriate lime-based mortars (not modern Portland cement, which damages historic masonry), repair and replace damaged brick and stone, and restore decorative masonry details.
