Custom Cedar Steam Room & Full Basement Spa
This Danbury basement project is one of our most complete wellness builds to date. The glass-enclosed steam room features tiered cedar benches, a sauna heater, and ambient blue LED lighting running the full perimeter — a genuine spa experience built directly into the home.
The surrounding basement was finished to match: a full bathroom with floor-to-ceiling dark grey porcelain tile, a floating walnut vanity with double integrated sinks and quartz countertop, and a living area anchored by a marble-look feature wall with a wide linear electric fireplace.
What We Build
We build the full range of home wellness spaces — from a single steam shower upgrade to a dedicated ground-floor spa suite with sauna, cold plunge, and lounge area. Every project starts with your space, your goals, and your budget. We don't upsell; we design what actually fits and will genuinely get used.
Traditional Finnish Saunas
Built with kiln-dried western red cedar or Nordic spruce, electric or wood-fired heaters, and proper ventilation for the dry heat cycles traditional saunas require. We handle framing, vapor barriers, insulation, cedar lining, bench millwork, heater installation, and dedicated electrical — everything under one contract.
Infrared Sauna Rooms
Infrared rooms operate at lower temperatures than traditional saunas and require less structural work — making them an efficient option for basements, spare rooms, or converted spaces. We build the enclosure with proper electrical, cedar or hemlock lining, and integrate chromotherapy lighting and control panels cleanly into the design.
Steam Shower Enclosures
A properly built steam shower requires a fully waterproofed enclosure, a correctly sized steam generator, and a ceiling pitched to prevent condensate drip. We handle all of it: waterproofing membrane, tile or stone walls and floor, teak or stone bench, frameless glass enclosure, steam generator sizing and installation, and the plumbing and electrical connections to support it.
Cold Plunge Rooms
Cold plunge installations range from a freestanding vessel in a bathroom corner to a fully tiled room with floor drain, waterproofed walls, and a recirculating chiller unit. We handle the structural and finish work — waterproofing, tile, drainage — and coordinate the mechanical connections for chiller or ice-bath systems.
Full Spa Suites
For clients who want a complete wellness destination at home, we design and build dedicated spa suites that combine sauna, steam, cold plunge, and lounge or massage space into one cohesive room. These are full gut builds — framing, mechanical rough-ins, waterproofing, tile, millwork, lighting, and finishes — designed around how you want to use the space.
Materials & Finishes
The materials in a sauna or steam room aren't just aesthetic choices — they affect performance, longevity, and safety. We only use materials rated for the heat and moisture levels specific to each application.
- Kiln-dried western red cedar — naturally antimicrobial, low splinter risk, stable under high heat
- Nordic spruce — lighter color, tighter grain, traditional Scandinavian sauna aesthetic
- Teak — for benches and flooring in steam and wet environments where cedar would degrade
- Porcelain and natural stone tile — for steam enclosures and cold plunge rooms; properly set with moisture-tolerant mortar and grout
- Chromotherapy LED systems — moisture-rated for sauna and steam environments
- Frameless glass enclosures — tempered safety glass for steam showers and wet areas
- Stainless steel and brass hardware — corrosion-resistant throughout
How We Work
Our Process
01
Space Assessment
We evaluate your space — basement, bathroom, spare room, or new addition — assess the structural requirements, and discuss which type of wellness installation fits your goals and budget. We bring material samples and photos of comparable projects.
02
Design & Specification
We develop a full design including layout, materials, heater or generator sizing, bench configuration, lighting, and all mechanical specifications. You'll know exactly what you're getting before we start.
03
Permitting & Rough-In
We handle permit applications where required and complete all framing, electrical, plumbing, and waterproofing rough-in work before any finish materials are installed — ensuring nothing is an afterthought.
04
Finish & Commissioning
Cedar or tile installation, glass enclosures, bench millwork, lighting, hardware, and a full mechanical test before handover. We walk you through operation and maintenance so you get years of trouble-free use.
Common Questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Where in the home can a sauna or steam room be built?
Basements, spare bedrooms, bathrooms, and additions are all viable locations. The key requirements are access to 240V electrical, adequate ventilation, and — for steam rooms — a floor drain. We assess your specific space and confirm feasibility at the estimate stage.
What's the difference between infrared and traditional saunas?
Traditional Finnish saunas use a heater and rocks to heat the air to 160–190°F, with optional steam from water poured over the rocks. Infrared saunas heat at lower temperatures (120–140°F) using infrared panels that warm the body directly. Traditional saunas offer the classic experience; infrared rooms are more energy-efficient and require less structural work.
Do sauna or steam room installations require a permit?
Usually yes — dedicated electrical circuits, plumbing connections, and structural work require permits in most Westchester and Fairfield County municipalities. We handle all permit applications and inspections as part of the project.
How long does a sauna or steam room installation take?
A prefab sauna installation in an existing space can be completed in 1–2 weeks once the rough-in work is done. A fully custom-built sauna or steam shower enclosure with tile, cedar, and custom millwork typically takes 3–6 weeks depending on scope.
